There are some rather bizarre 911 conspiracy theories circulating. Some of them suggest the happenings on that day were a prelude to apocalypse while others have suggested it was the act of extra terrestrials whose mission is to colonize this planet.
911 refers to a date in history when the USA was attacked by terrorists. Aeroplanes were used as missiles and were deliberately flown into the New York World Trade Centre and also into the Pentagon. There were 2000 American victims as well as others from other countries such as 63 British nationals. The attack was carried out by suicide bombers who also died in the attack.
The event has been described at the worse acts of terrorism every to be carried out on American soil. The scenes that erupted that day are very dramatic even when footage is reviewed 10 years later. It really does play out like the scenes of a disaster movie.
First is the explosion from the explosion from the impact. Then there is the billowing smoke emanating from the towers. Crowds in the locality of the building are gasping, screaming and running. There are pictures from inside the lower part of the building as fire fighters try to organize evacuation. Finally, the world looks on as the twin towers collapse, one after the other.
Many people polled about the events are sceptical about the official account offered by the American Government and believe some of the alternative explanations. According to the theorists the whole thing was actually organized by the American government as an attempt to justify its actions in Afghanistan. They cannot understand how the twin towers could have fallen as a result of the impact and believe the collapse had all the hallmarks of a controlled demolition.
Despite all the 911 conspiracy theories, one fact is without any question. Many innocent people lost their lives that day in the most terrible circumstances. It is a day we will never forget.

Culture stories teaching humans how to live there are plenty, like islands in the Great Rivers of the world, those of Family, Clan and Tribe with their basis in biological structuring, individually expanding with social, economic and political connections of the 'Cities of Man', the first of which was built by Cain, murderer of his brother, but remaining islands ignorant of the Stream's origin at a source in the mountains and its ending in the ocean of infinity into which that Great River of Life issues, as its Story flows past them and is plumbed for insight by the mystically enabled with music, dance, literature, painting, sculpture and architecture, and the art of stage and screen.
Humankind, finding itself in that stream, evolved with two crucial drives of behaviour, locomotion and communication, through which people, moving between existential poles of empathy and terror in their life with ‘the others’, generate human conscious awareness on a scale that became known as the Earth-dominating Human Phenomenon. It is this Phenomenon that is at this juncture of history faced with the task of connecting the islands where the populations exist deploying their faculties for the purposes imposed on them by the opportunities in their lives, expecting in that way to receive an understanding of the Stream in which humankind observes itself acting and reacting as its members are driven to navigate it.
When a novelist like William Gibson writes his latest book, Zero History, his insights inform his readers in ways philosophers and theologians used to do, who have now lost the clues that had been guiding their thinking in the service of the Science of Understanding. He can see the islands of human existence, as they pop up in the histories of individuals, families, clans, tribes, unions, societies, nations, the world, and knows that their particular stories, desperately looking for their purpose, are beginning to open up to each other sometimes in war and sometimes in peace in a humanity-driven movement that asks for a coming to rest in the mystery of the Stream, that some mistakingly think to find in the fata morganas of mind-riveting ideas or drugs.
The 9/11 reduction to ground zero of the twin towers of the New York World Trade Centre by a squad of Middle Eastern terrorists, flying hijacked American planes into them, has become the metaphor for a story of men, women and children in a world of illusions that drive them to despair and death. The image of ‘islands in the stream’, used by Ernest Hemingway for one of his novels, came to me while remembering a trip on the Zambezi upstream from the Victoria Falls. The islands there are visited by humans and by elephants, both for barely conscious purposes of their own, islands having a mythic interest for consciousness-generating travel, as do mountains, oceans, places of pilgrimage, in particular the Haj of the Believers, and what is generally beyond the horizon, more so if the travelling is done on foot or by primitive means and if the goal is a family or clan or classmates’ meeting, and this is also the case with the war aims of terrorist odysseys.
In his A Dictionary of Symbols Tom Chetwynd tells us that the philosopher/psychiatrist C. G. Jung found that all manifestations of the unconscious, of which travel is one, were symbolically purposeful. Symbolism is always working towards a goal, towards completion, he continues his explanation. And if anything works towards a specific end, this seems to imply a certain unconscious foreknowledge, a potential, some antecedent force at work.
From the mere fact that the unconscious psyche counterbalances one-sided tendencies and vital deficiencies, we can infer an inherent direction or goal. In the same way in Nature the unconscious forces tend towards more highly evolved forms such as the organ of sight, and among animals the migratory and traveling animals, in particular the human being, which suggests a direction and therefore some kind of goal.
The goal of the psyche appears to be increased awareness, higher and higher states of consciousness – all four Functions, ideally held in balance within a society, a situation open to change from individuals, when whichever among those of Intuition – Thinking – Feeling – Sensation, being Dominant – Inferior – Subsidiary in the psyche, is used in a more rational and vibrant way. It is an end without end. The end or goal is also the way to it. There is no real distinction between the two. In the realm of feeling the aim or goal is to keep on feeling more deeply, more widely, which is also the way to the goal.
Although the goal is ultimately unattainable, it is not to be dismissed for that reason. The difference between what we are and what we become is determined by the goals we work towards. And in the end, it is the process of becoming which is the only goal worth the effort anyway; the New Man/Woman/Child, reborn, enlightened, decisive, of which the symbol is submersion in the Stream like a baptism, by accepting in the peace of a foreseen death the ultimate revelation of life’s truth lived on its islands.

I was going to comment on Matt’s post but will make my comments here as you have raised this possibility.
Unfortunately Matt rather wasted his time with his post because he apparently did not give the appropriate care to reading my original article. Consequently he has resorted to irrelevant strawmannery and word play.
Matt actually conceded my point with: “I grant that people can use theological premises in an attempt to justify different and inconsistent positions . . .” However, his subsequent comment: “this is a fairly innocuous claim,” is heartless. Tell that to the 3000 who died in the New York World Trade Centre attack, to the many women whose rights and lives are violated under Sharia law and under theocratic regimes, to those massacred in the Jonestown tragedy, to the many victims of indiscriminate bombings of mosques and public places in India, Pakistan, Iraq, etc., etc.,, etc. I could, unfortunately, go on.
And yes, as Matt says this is not restricted to religious dogma – the very point I made in the highlighted disclaimer at the end of my article (didn’t Matt read that far?). It’s a common problem with extreme ideologies. So was my point again “innocuous”? Again, tell that to all the victims of ideologically “justified” persecution by Mao ZeDong, Stalin, Pol Pot, Pinochet, Franco, etc., etc. Unfortunately again, I could go on.
Matt has disingenuously played with the meaning of the word “justify” to distort my article. Similarly, he is just wrong (to put it mildly) in his claim that I say, or argue that, “Belief in a god entails an extreme form of moral relativism” and “God's existence entails extreme moral relativism.” I say, or indeed believe, nothing of the sort!!
Most of us (theists and non-theists alike) come to our moral/ethical positions as a result of our moral intuitions and using moral logic. That is not a relativist position.
However, when a group or individual “justifies” a position by saying that it is what their god wants or commands (or what their Great leader or their ideology demands) they do this to override our normal moral intuitions and logic. Because anything can be “justified” in this situation it is an extreme form of moral relativism.]]>

Constructing Islands in the Stream of Life
is Humanity’s Way of navigating it
Having carried out its task of connecting the peoples of the world by means of transport and communications the Age of Empire demolished the steel structures of its conquering power, only to discover that they now had a problem with the Story that was expected to hold together the tribes and nations of the Earth. This Story had been scientifically composed to replace the failing social bonding imposed on them by the Story told for that purpose of cohesion by the Religions of God and his Prophets, seeking to bring a supernatural conciliation factor into the ‘War and Peace’ Story of Empire and balance the way of life on offer there.
Culture stories teaching humans how to live there are plenty, like islands in the Great Rivers of the world, those of Family, Clan and Tribe with their basis in biological structuring, individually expanding with social, economic and political connections of the 'Cities of Man', the first of which was built by Cain, murderer of his brother, but remaining islands ignorant of the Stream's origin at a source in the mountains and its ending in the ocean of infinity into which that Great River of Life issues, as its Story flows past them and is plumbed for insight by the mystically enabled with music, dance, literature, painting, sculpture and architecture, and the art of stage and screen.
Humankind, finding itself in that stream, evolved with two crucial drives of behaviour, locomotion and communication, through which people, moving between existential poles of empathy and terror in their life with ‘the others’, generate human conscious awareness on a scale that became known as the Earth-dominating Human Phenomenon. It is this Phenomenon that is at this juncture of history faced with the task of connecting the islands where the populations exist deploying their faculties for the purposes imposed on them by the opportunities in their lives, expecting in that way to receive an understanding of the Stream in which humankind observes itself acting and reacting as its members are driven to navigate it.
When a novelist like William Gibson writes his latest book, Zero History, his insights inform his readers in ways philosophers and theologians used to do, who have now lost the clues that had been guiding their thinking in the service of the Science of Understanding. He can see the islands of human existence, as they pop up in the histories of individuals, families, clans, tribes, unions, societies, nations, the world, and knows that their particular stories, desperately looking for their purpose, are beginning to open up to each other sometimes in war and sometimes in peace in a humanity-driven movement that asks for a coming to rest in the mystery of the Stream, that some mistakingly think to find in the fata morganas of mind-riveting ideas or drugs.
The 9/11 reduction to ground zero of the twin towers of the New York World Trade Centre by a squad of Middle Eastern terrorists, flying hijacked American planes into them, has become the metaphor for a story of men, women and children in a world of illusions that drive them to despair and death. Flying into their own destruction the terrorists killed 3000 people in what they, taking themselves to be true believers carrying out an act of Faith, considered the temple of the merciless God of America.
The scale of what this metaphor indicates is now worldwide and ought therefore to reveal to human awareness enough of the mystery surrounding them to bring with truth and reconciliation the ‘peace that passes understanding’.
It did so in the past when the social, economic and political connections among populations reached a point of accumulation, where they found themselves on the cusp of annihilation or survival and their choice was for life, one with natural drives, which with expanded insight receive targeted direction and thus focused respond to the existential need to subject the informing speed that electronic machines are bringing to them to imaginative thinking, aimed at revealing the truth of it all.
The image of ‘islands in the stream’, used by Ernest Hemingway for one of his novels, came to me while remembering a trip on the Zambezi upstream from the Victoria Falls. The islands there are visited by humans and by elephants, both for barely conscious purposes of their own, islands having a mythic interest for consciousness-generating travel, as do mountains, oceans, places of pilgrimage, in particular the Haj of the Believers, and what is generally beyond the horizon, more so if the travelling is done on foot or by primitive means and if the goal is a family or clan or classmates’ meeting, and this is also the case with the war aims of terrorist odysseys.
In his A Dictionary of Symbols Tom Chetwynd tells us that the philosopher/psychiatrist C. G. Jung found that all manifestations of the unconscious, of which travel is one, were symbolically purposeful. Symbolism is always working towards a goal, towards completion, he continues his explanation. And if anything works towards a specific end, this seems to imply a certain unconscious foreknowledge, a potential, some antecedent force at work.
From the mere fact that the unconscious psyche counterbalances one-sided tendencies and vital deficiencies, we can infer an inherent direction or goal. In the same way in Nature the unconscious forces tend towards more highly evolved forms such as the organ of sight, and among animals the migratory and traveling animals, in particular the human being, which suggests a direction and therefore some kind of goal.
The goal of the psyche appears to be increased awareness, higher and higher states of consciousness – all four Functions, ideally held in balance within a society, a situation open to change from individuals, when whichever among those of Intuition – Thinking – Feeling – Sensation, being Dominant – Inferior – Subsidiary in the psyche, is used in a more rational and vibrant way. It is an end without end. The end or goal is also the way to it. There is no real distinction between the two. In the realm of feeling the aim or goal is to keep on feeling more deeply, more widely, which is also the way to the goal.
Although the goal is ultimately unattainable, it is not to be dismissed for that reason. The difference between what we are and what we become is determined by the goals we work towards. And in the end, it is the process of becoming which is the only goal worth the effort anyway; the New Man/Woman/Child, reborn, enlightened, decisive, of which the symbol is submersion in the Stream like a baptism, by accepting in the peace of a foreseen death the ultimate revelation of life’s truth lived on its islands.

In his A Dictionary of Symbols Tom Chetwynd tells us that the philosopher/psychiatrist C. G. And if anything works towards a specific end, this seems to imply a certain unconscious foreknowledge, a potential, some antecedent force at work.

The goal of the psyche appears to be increased awareness, higher and higher states of consciousness – all four Functions, ideally held in balance within a society, a situation open to change from individuals, when whichever among those of Intuition – Thinking – Feeling – Sensation, being Dominant – Inferior – Subsidiary in the psyche, is used in a more rational and vibrant way. It is an end without end. The end or goal is also the way to it. There is no real distinction between the two. In the realm of feeling the aim or goal is to keep on feeling more deeply, more widely, which is also the way to the goal.
Although the goal is ultimately unattainable, it is not to be dismissed for that reason. The difference between what we are and what we become is determined by the goals we work towards. Humankind, finding itself in that stream, evolved with two crucial drives of behaviour, locomotion and communication, through which people, moving between existential poles of empathy and terror in their life with ‘the others’, generate human conscious awareness on a scale that became known as the Earth-dominating Human Phenomenon. It is this Phenomenon that is at this juncture of history faced with the task of connecting the islands where the populations exist deploying their faculties for the purposes imposed on them by the opportunities in their lives, expecting in that way to receive an understanding of the Stream in which humankind observes itself acting and reacting as its members are driven to navigate it.
When a novelist like William Gibson writes his latest book, Zero History, his insights inform his readers in ways philosophers and theologians used to do, who have now lost the clues that had been guiding their thinking in the service of the Science of Understanding. He can see the islands of human existence, as they pop up in the histories of individuals, families, clans, tribes, unions, societies, nations, the world, and knows that their particular stories, desperately looking for their purpose, are beginning to open up to each other sometimes in war and sometimes in peace in a humanity-driven movement that asks for a coming to rest in the mystery of the Stream, that some mistakingly think to find in the fata morganas of mind-riveting ideas or drugs.
The 9/11 reduction to ground zero of the twin towers of the New York World Trade Centre by a squad of Middle Eastern terrorists, flying hijacked American planes into them, has become the metaphor for a story of men, women and children in a world of illusions that drive them to despair and death. Flying into their own destruction the terrorists killed 3000 people in what they, taking themselves to be true believers carrying out an act of Faith, considered the temple of the merciless God of America.
The scale of what this metaphor indicates is now worldwide and ought therefore to reveal to human awareness enough of the mystery surrounding them to bring with truth and reconciliation the ‘peace that passes understanding’.
It did so in the past when the social, economic and political connections among populations reached a point of accumulation, where they found themselves on the cusp of annihilation or survival and their choice was for life, one with natural drives, which with expanded insight receive targeted direction and thus focused respond to the existential need to subject the informing speed that electronic machines are bringing to them to imaginative thinking, aimed at revealing the truth of it all.
The image of ‘islands in the stream’, used by Ernest Hemingway for one of his novels, came to me while remembering a trip on the Zambezi upstream from the Victoria Falls. The islands there are visited by humans and by elephants, both for barely conscious purposes of their own, islands having a mythic interest for consciousness-generating travel, as do mountains, oceans, places of pilgrimage, in particular the Haj of the Believers, and what is generally beyond the horizon, more so if the travelling is done on foot or by primitive means and if the goal is a family or clan or classmates’ meeting, and this is also the case with the war aims of terrorist odysseys.
In his A Dictionary of Symbols Tom Chetwynd tells us that the philosopher/psychiatrist C. G. Jung found that all manifestations of the unconscious, of which travel is one, were symbolically purposeful. Symbolism is always working towards a goal, towards completion, he continues his explanation. And if anything works towards a specific end, this seems to imply a certain unconscious foreknowledge, a potential, some antecedent force at work.
From the mere fact that the unconscious psyche counterbalances one-sided tendencies and vital deficiencies, we can infer an inherent direction or goal. In the same way in Nature the unconscious forces tend towards more highly evolved forms such as the organ of sight, and among animals the migratory and traveling animals, in particular the human being, which suggests a direction and therefore some kind of goal.
The goal of the psyche appears to be increased awareness, higher and higher states of consciousness – all four Functions, ideally held in balance within a society, a situation open to change from individuals, when whichever among those of Intuition – Thinking – Feeling – Sensation, being Dominant – Inferior – Subsidiary in the psyche, is used in a more rational and vibrant way. It is an end without end. The end or goal is also the way to it. There is no real distinction between the two. In the realm of feeling the aim or goal is to keep on feeling more deeply, more widely, which is also the way to the goal.
Although the goal is ultimately unattainable, it is not to be dismissed for that reason. The difference between what we are and what we become is determined by the goals we work towards. And in the end, it is the process of becoming which is the only goal worth the effort anyway; the New Man/Woman/Child, reborn, enlightened, decisive, of which the symbol is submersion in the Stream like a baptism, by accepting in the peace of a foreseen death the ultimate revelation of life’s truth lived on its islands.

is Humanity’s Way of navigating it
Having carried out its task of connecting the peoples of the world by means of transport and communications the Age of Empire demolished the steel structures of its conquering power, only to discover that they now had a problem with the Story that was expected to hold together the tribes and nations of the Earth. This Story had been scientifically composed to replace the failing social bonding imposed on them by the Story told for that purpose of cohesion by the Religions of God and his Prophets, seeking to bring a supernatural conciliation factor into the ‘War and Peace’ Story of Empire and balance the way of life on offer there.
Culture stories teaching humans how to live there are plenty, like islands in the Great Rivers of the world, those of Family, Clan and Tribe with their basis in biological structuring, individually expanding with social, economic and political connections of the 'Cities of Man', the first of which was built by Cain, murderer of his brother, but remaining islands ignorant of the Stream's origin at a source in the mountains and its ending in the ocean of infinity into which that Great River of Life issues, as its Story flows past them and is plumbed for insight by the mystically enabled with music, dance, literature, painting, sculpture and architecture, and the art of stage and screen.
Humankind, finding itself in that stream, evolved with two crucial drives of behaviour, locomotion and communication, through which people, moving between existential poles of empathy and terror in their life with ‘the others’, generate human conscious awareness on a scale that became known as the Earth-dominating Human Phenomenon. It is this Phenomenon that is at this juncture of history faced with the task of connecting the islands where the populations exist deploying their faculties for the purposes imposed on them by the opportunities in their lives, expecting in that way to receive an understanding of the Stream in which humankind observes itself acting and reacting as its members are driven to navigate it.
When a novelist like William Gibson writes his latest book, Zero History, his insights inform his readers in ways philosophers and theologians used to do, who have now lost the clues that had been guiding their thinking in the service of the Science of Understanding. He can see the islands of human existence, as they pop up in the histories of individuals, families, clans, tribes, unions, societies, nations, the world, and knows that their particular stories, desperately looking for their purpose, are beginning to open up to each other sometimes in war and sometimes in peace in a humanity-driven movement that asks for a coming to rest in the mystery of the Stream, that some mistakingly think to find in the fata morganas of mind-riveting ideas or drugs.
The 9/11 reduction to ground zero of the twin towers of the New York World Trade Centre by a squad of Middle Eastern terrorists, flying hijacked American planes into them, has become the metaphor for a story of men, women and children in a world of illusions that drive them to despair and death. Flying into their own destruction the terrorists killed 3000 people in what they, taking themselves to be true believers carrying out an act of Faith, considered the temple of the merciless God of America.
The scale of what this metaphor indicates is now worldwide and ought therefore to reveal to human awareness enough of the mystery surrounding them to bring with truth and reconciliation the ‘peace that passes understanding’.
It did so in the past when the social, economic and political connections among populations reached a point of accumulation, where they found themselves on the cusp of annihilation or survival and their choice was for life, one with natural drives, which with expanded insight receive targeted direction and thus focused respond to the existential need to subject the informing speed that electronic machines are bringing to them to imaginative thinking, aimed at revealing the truth of it all.
The image of ‘islands in the stream’, used by Ernest Hemingway for one of his novels, came to me while remembering a trip on the Zambezi upstream from the Victoria Falls. The islands there are visited by humans and by elephants, both for barely conscious purposes of their own, islands having a mythic interest for consciousness-generating travel, as do mountains, oceans, places of pilgrimage, in particular the Haj of the Believers, and what is generally beyond the horizon, more so if the travelling is done on foot or by primitive means and if the goal is a family or clan or classmates’ meeting, and this is also the case with the war aims of terrorist odysseys.
In his A Dictionary of Symbols Tom Chetwynd tells us that the philosopher/psychiatrist C. G. Jung found that all manifestations of the unconscious, of which travel is one, were symbolically purposeful. Symbolism is always working towards a goal, towards completion, he continues his explanation. And if anything works towards a specific end, this seems to imply a certain unconscious foreknowledge, a potential, some antecedent force at work.
From the mere fact that the unconscious psyche counterbalances one-sided tendencies and vital deficiencies, we can infer an inherent direction or goal. In the same way in Nature the unconscious forces tend towards more highly evolved forms such as the organ of sight, and among animals the migratory and traveling animals, in particular the human being, which suggests a direction and therefore some kind of goal.
The goal of the psyche appears to be increased awareness, higher and higher states of consciousness – all four Functions, ideally held in balance within a society, a situation open to change from individuals, when whichever among those of Intuition – Thinking – Feeling – Sensation, being Dominant – Inferior – Subsidiary in the psyche, is used in a more rational and vibrant way. It is an end without end. The end or goal is also the way to it. There is no real distinction between the two. In the realm of feeling the aim or goal is to keep on feeling more deeply, more widely, which is also the way to the goal.
Although the goal is ultimately unattainable, it is not to be dismissed for that reason. The difference between what we are and what we become is determined by the goals we work towards. And in the end, it is the process of becoming which is the only goal worth the effort anyway; the New Man/Woman/Child, reborn, enlightened, decisive, of which the symbol is submersion in the Stream like a baptism, by accepting in the peace of a foreseen death the ultimate revelation of life’s truth lived on its islands.
